A sustainable transformation at 161 Drury Lane

11 February 2026 - News

The office building at 161 Drury Lane, located in the heart of Covent Garden, has been successfully refurbished following an extensive redevelopment project.

Originally constructed in 1923, the building has been carefully transformed into a modern and sustainable office space while retaining its historic character. The redevelopment, which began in 2024, focused on retrofitting the existing structure rather than replacing it, ensuring the building’s original features and architectural identity were preserved.

As part of the redevelopment, a one-storey extension was added and an outdated external fire escape was removed, improving both the functionality and appearance of the building. These changes have helped deliver a more efficient and environmentally responsible workspace, aligned with modern office requirements.

Given the site’s heritage, achieving an accurate brick match to meet planning requirements was essential. Working closely with the architect, a sympathetic match to the original brickwork was achieved with our Berkeley Yellow bricks slips.

A total of 20,000 slips, 1,500 corners, and 250 cut-and-bond angles were precision-cut at our Shropshire factory and delivered to site ready for installation. Manufactured to suit Ash & Lacy’s Mechslip system, the brick slips blended seamlessly with the existing façade, complementing the neighbouring buildings and preserving the building’s historic character.
