The Golden Thread

Supporting the Golden Thread’s goals of safety, clarity & continuity.

01

Specification

Evidencing the clear, accurate and comprehensive requirements of a build from the beginning.

The specification sets clear requirements for the project from the start, linking design, construction, and ongoing safety. By integrating our products through NBS we enable architects and designers to work faster and more accurately, meet regulatory and safety requirements, and ensure transparency and accountability.

02

Standard Drawings

Detailed drawings play a critical role in demonstrating that a building will be constructed safely and comply with regulations.

Drawings provide visual proof that the design meets Building Regulations and fire safety requirements and they allow the Building Safety Regulator to assess whether or not a design can be constructed safely. These initial drawings are a core part of the “Golden Thread” of information – all documented, traceable and up-datable.

Drawings Required:

  • General Arrangement
  • Fire Strategy Drawings
  • Structural Drawings
  • Mechanical, Electrical & Public Health Drawings
  • Construction Details
  • Access & Egress Drawings
  • Environmental Drawings
03

U-Value Calculation

Used to show that external walls, roofs and floors meet minimum thermal performance requirements.

Through Gateway 2 you must prove that your building complies with Part L (Conservation of Fuel and Power) of the Building and Safety Regulations. A U-Value calculation will show that thermal bridging is controlled and that a building will be energy efficient and comfortable.

U-value calculations may seem like just an energy efficiency measure, but in the context of Gateway 2 and the Golden Thread, they are a tool for compliance and design validation as well as a traceable record for long-term building performance and occupant safety.

Bricks alone do not determine the U-Value, it is calculated for the entire wall assembly including insulation, internal/external finishes, air cavities and the brick itself. We supply material specific data that is required for the U-Value calculations, specifically thermal conductivity, thickness and density measurements.

04

Technical Data Sheets

Comprehensive document detailing technical specifications, performance data, materials and compliance of a product.

Data sheets help architects, builders and specifiers ensure that a product is suitable for its intended application. Our bricks and brick slips are all tested in accordance with the relevant BS EN standard and cover size, tolerance, quality, strength, fire, frost and water absorbency.

Product Data Sheets contain structured product information and standardised data which evidence traceability and accountability across a building’s life-cycle and helps maintain design integrity from initial concept to construction.

Data Sheets demonstrate compliance with regulation 7, stating that materials are appropriate for their intended use and properly installed. They are essential for justifying material choices to the Building Safety Regulator and for reducing submission delays while providing confidence that the time sensitive submission process will pass smoothly.

05

UKCA/CE Certifications

Legal mark of conformity that indicates a product meets relevant safety, health and environmental protection requirements.

The UKCA mark is the UK’s post-Brexit equivalent of the CE mark. For brick products, it shows that they meet relevant UK Designated Standards (e.g., BS EN 771 for masonry units) and comply with construction product regulations. It verifies:

  • Performance characteristics (e.g., strength, durability, fire resistance)
  • Factory Production Control (FPC)
  • Third-party assessment where required
  • Providing verifiable product performance data: Helps ensure that specified materials (like bricks) meet safety and performance requirements.
  • Enabling traceability: Documents origin, conformity, and batch records for construction products—key in case of future issues or audits.
  • Supporting design intent: Certificated products demonstrate alignment with fire safety and structural standards as designed.
06

Fire Classification

Our bricks slips comply with A1 fire safety ratings and include the necessary relevant data for Gateway 2 submission and approval.

Clay fired bricks are A1 by nature. Made from raw, natural materials the bricks are fired at extremely high temperatures, which permanently change their chemical structure. This makes them non-combustible, inert in fire conditions and stable even under high temperatures.

We evidence this on our product data sheets and declaration of performance which are available for each individual product.

Regulation 7 Guidance

Expert advice on the post-Grenfell changes to the Building Safety Act and ensuring your brick cladding product selection meets this criteria.

Imperial Bricks can play a valuable advisory role in the Gateway 2 submission process—especially in helping design and construction teams comply with Regulation 7 of the Building Safety Regulations under the Building Safety Act 2022.

  • Advising on appropriate product selection.
  • Interpreting technical standards
  • Providing full digital documentation
  • Working with design teams to support specification writing
  • Offering training and CPD sessions
